Ifrah started as an intern with Bilan. She was so good that she is now a permanent member of the team.
“It was never my plan to work in media,” says Ifrah. “I studied political science and international relations and hope to be a diplomat one day.”
“After completing my degree at SIMAD university in Mogadishu, I became frustrated as I couldn’t find a job. I saw an advert for Bilan’s internship programme on Instagram and applied. I had started to follow them on social media after hearing about Somalia’s only all-women media house and wanting to find out more about them.”
Ifrah was born in Mogadishu and, like so many people, had to flee the city with her family due to fierce fighting. She spent several years in the northern city of Hargeisa before returning home.
She likes going to the beach, blogging and listening to audiobooks in her spare time. “I like non-fiction,” she says. “I like books about social and economic issues, not politics.”
Ifrah says she is thriving in an all-female environment but hopes that things will change in Somalia so that men and women can work together as equals.
